By jembendell on September 15, 2025 There was a huge anti-immigration march in Britain this past weekend. It has woken a lot of people up to the extent of support for hard right politics. I was aware of this, and so decided that my first speech in Britain for two years needed to address politics directly. I am not new to political communication. In the first half of 2017, I worked in front line politics with the leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, and his team. I advised on strategic communications, co-wrote speeches, and some of the manifesto. I went on to train some of the current backroom staff for PM Keir Starmer, including Morgan McSweeney. However, I had never given a speech about politics myself. I sensed that now is a time of major political reconfiguration in Britain – an aspect of the breakdown of old systems and patterns. So, it is the time for fresh thinking and narratives, arising from a politics of solidarity. Some people welcomed the speech, and others were upset at some of the language.
