CHRISTIAN [COMMONS?] COUNCIL FOR MONETARY JUSTICE
now in online open global table interfaith exchanges
CCMJ exists to counter the ominous suggestion that ‘The neglect of Economics is a wound in the side of the church’ [Jurgen Moltmann]
CCMJ recognises that the Globalization of humanity is a natural, biological, evolutionary process. Yet we face an enormous crisis because the most central and important aspect of globalization — its economy — is currently being organized in a manner that so gravely violates the fundamental principles by which healthy living systems are organized that it threatens the demise of our whole civilization.
CCMJ believes that our faith makes us all ‘economists’ – housekeepers in the ceaseless creativity of God. At whatever level of knowledge or ignorance we start, we should be prepared to raise questions about the creation of an eco-system of economic activity that works for everyone and protects the earth. The inclusive justice of God requires nothing less.
CCMJ believes that there are four drivers at the root of all our great and growing dangers and dilemmas: –
• an unquestioning acceptance of the economic status quo
• a profound mal-distribution of land, assets and resources
• an inordinate legal power given to corporations
• a fraudulent, unjust banking, money/credit debt system.
CCMJ encourages people to explore for themselves the mystery of poverty in a world of actual and potential abundance, by dialogue, association and moral support,
To help make poverty history CCMJ associates promote:
• a profound questioning of usury (all interest beyond transparent fees) in contemporary society;
• respect for real wealth – being life itself;
• genuine investing in communities where risks and rewards are truly shared;
• making all trade fair trade;
• giving social and political priority to a living income for all;
• developing interest free pension systems;
• advocating open capital and asset-based financing;
• proposing new ways of providing housing for all;
• resisting the privatisation of public assets;
• working for democracy and localisation within global integrity;
CCMJ ADVOCATES THE RETURNING OF THE ISSUANCE OF NEW MONEY TO THE STATE – AS PUBLICLY CREATED PEOPLE’S CREDIT IN SUPPORT OF THEIR PRODUCTIVE CAPACITY
CCMJ has been playing a part in the laying of the foundation for a revival of faith in inclusive public truths in a new form that can appeal to members of other faith traditions and to good faith among agnostics and atheists. A lot of the intellectual groundwork has been done in defining holistic theology in its rich relation to earth system science; and wide experience is being regularly monitored for ways of applying those insights to the economic and financial system under which presently operate. We don’t know enough about what will start to popularize that worldview in the secular world.
For the past nearly 15 years, our initiative at the London Global Table has been promoting thoughtful interpretation of what it means to be good in all we do, personally and professionally. We have insisted that the abundance that comes from God and earth, and from human effort, must be shared. Concentrated in the hands of the few, it becomes a lethal clot in the circulatory system of our world.
