A mechanistic view of nature emerged in Europe in the seventeenth century with the Scientific Revolution, and has since pervaded virtually every aspect of global mainstream society. Even biology, the study of life itself, became dominated by a reductionist view that equated living beings with clockwork. I personally discovered this nearly twenty years ago, as I underwent an existential crisis in my life. I wanted to ensure that whatever direction I took in my future was truly meaningful—but how could that be ascertained? In response to this question, I began a multi-year research project that led to my books The Patterning Instinct and The Web of Meaning. As I initially dipped into mainstream narratives, I came across recognized “authorities” such as Richard Dawkins telling me I was just a machine dominated by my selfish genes. Early on, however, my path was brightened by pioneering thinkers such as Fritjof Capra and Ursula Goodenough, who pointed me in a direction that I’ve been grateful to pursue ever since—one that embraces both scientific rigor and a deeply spiritual realization of the universe as an integrated whole. Later on, I came across the mind-expanding philosophical explorations of philosopher/biologist Andreas Weber, which helped me to frame my own sense-making about the world that I formulated in The Web of Meaning. So, it gives me great personal delight that next week I will be in conversation with these two biologist visionaries. On Thursday, July 28 at 1:00 pm Pacific, we’ll be discussing a topic dear to my heart: Shifting Paradigms: How biology reveals the sacred quality of life. Among other things, we’ll be discussing both the importance and limitations of reductionist thinking, how deep scientific understanding can naturally lead to a spiritual orientation, and why an ontological paradigm shift is needed to help redirect our civilization from its destructive trajectory. This Deep Transformation Network Live Interactive Conversation is free and open to all. After our initial dialogue, the second half of the session will be interactive, so you’ll have the opportunity to ask Ursula and Andreas your own questions directly. Don’t miss it!
