Mining in the Phillipines

We have launched a new project addressing the concerns of Filipino church communities about the detrimental impacts of the local extractives industry. This exciting piece of work is undertaken in partnership with USPG. We are pleased to be using our particular skills, connections and influence to advocate on behalf of these communities and look forward to making some real impact

Ethical Money Churches

This has been thriving in the South west where we work with 33 churches – our thanks to Sabrina and her volunteers for their great work. We are expanding EMC in the West Midlands and are looking for a development manager. We have just launched an EMC pilot in Scotland with the Church of Scotland.

Corporate Governance Green Paper

In our submission to government, we called for company boards and fund managers to adopt a culture of integrity and stewardship designed to enhance the trust of all stakeholders in the company’s activities.

Our full response

Intergenerational Justice

We held a joint event with Just Share to launch our Intergenerational Justice report during Good Money Week at St Mary-le-Bow, London.

Stakeholders Alliance for Corporate Accountability

We continued to work with Father Kevin of our partner SACA to raise awareness of the issues and to inform and gain support to engage further with Shell in Nigeria. We also wrote to Shell challenging whether it’s true that Nigeria has been short changed by over $13.29 billion over a nine year period, questioning whether its Board of Directors has commissioned an independent investigation of the company’s involvement in this deal.

Tax Justice

ECCR sponsored and participated in a gathering of churches to discuss the future of church engagement with tax justice

Good Money Week

In Good Money Week ECCR partnered with the Church of Scotland, Christian Aid Scotland, Oikocredit UK and Ireland and Eco-Congregation Scotland on “What have faith and money got to do with climate change?”.  It explored the key issues around how we can invest our money ethically in order to have a positive impact on the climate.

Staffing

Alison Prout joined us from Quaker Peace & Social Witness as Communications & Membership Development Manager adding much needed capacity and experience to the ECCR team. Kamila Skupien, a volunteer with ARSP (Action Reconciliation Service for Peace), joined the ECCR/USPG extractives project.

Funding

We are very grateful for the extra resources entrusted to us by the Friends Provident Foundation, the Barrow Cadbury Trust, Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust and other trusts and members

And into 2018

We will be focussing on the following areas:

· Extending the reach and impact of Ethical Money Churches;

· Developing our project with USPG/ARSP on the extractives sector;

· Bringing greater transparency and equity to our tax systems and actively supporting the development of the Churches for Tax Justice initiative.

· Working with partners on issues of corporate governance, such as Executive Pay, and company engagement.

We want people of faith to contribute to a fair, resilient and sustainable economic system that serves people and planet. We are continuing to develop an exciting new strategy and would welcome to hear from members about issues which they feel we should be including in our activities for the next three years. Please contact our Exec Director – john.arnold@eccr.org.uk – for further information.
