View this email in your browser Basit Mahmood@basitmahmood91*|Monday 5th June|A universal basic income (UBI) of £1,600 a month is to be trialled in England for the first time in a pilot programme running in two locations.The trial will involve 30 people in central Jarrow, in north-east England, and East Finchley, in north London and is set to run for two years, with no conditions attached. The purpose of the pilot is to better understand the effects of UBI on people’s lives. As Andy Burnham has previously said, UBI is an idea ‘whose time has come’. With growing levels of poverty, inequality and insecure work, we need bold and radical ideas to give dignity and security to all. Some will no doubt be fuming against a UBI. One of their most common arguments is that a UBI will make people lazy and incentivise people to drop out of the labour market, yet this is not backed up by evidence. A study of UBI pilots carried out by the National Bureau of Economic Research in the U.S., found that: “The evidence does not suggest an average worker will drop out of the labour force when provided with unconditional cash, even when the transfer is large”. …….
