ONE YEAR ON FROM ITS LAUNCH, HAS OCCUPY LONDON MADE A DIFFERENCE?

Peter Dombi and Tom Moriarty from the Economics Working Group of Occupy London will be the guest speakers at the Greencoat Forum on the evening of 9 October.

They will provide insights into Occupy, their own personal journey to Occupy, how it emerged and operates, its structure and its gols. They will talk about some of the proposals already made by Occupy and how they are relevant even more so now than they were a year ago and they will share ideas and proposals for the future, concerning the banking and financial system. The second part of the evening will be interactive with space- for discussion and questions. The Forum will be chaired by Don de Silva, an environmental activist.

Tom Moriarty is a graduate of the LSE in socio-economic theory and former City boss of ten years. He therefore has some insight into the workings of the City, business and the global economy. A musician, he started writing the album Fire in the doll’s house in 2006, partly based on his observations of the City. Q magazine commented:”The social injustice and fear of apathetic inertia at the core of this debut will win the gamekeeper-turned poacher no friends among his former colleagues, but should earn him a bevy of new ones: The Sunday Times added:’The protest singer has a pulse again: Having left the City, he is now a recording artist and has been a member of Occupy since the beginning. He is currently writing a book with colleagues in the Economics Working Group called the Little Book of Ideas that seeks to explain in simple terms the issues surrounding the financial crisis, the recession and economic ideas for the future.

Born and brought up in Worcester, Peter Dombi studied Physics at university before opting for a career in computing. However inspired by the wave of privatisations in the 1990’s he moved to making his living investing in the stock market. Initially enthusiastic about Western capitalism, he soon began to realise that the vast amounts of wealth being created, far from filtering down to the masses, were in fact being retained by a wealthy elite. Frustrated by an economic system that seemed out of control, and a parliamentary system that seemed to no longer represent the people, but instead served only the politicians themselves, Peter joined the Occupy movement almost from the start, viewing it as the only real opportunity to change society and create a fairer world for all.
